how to make money online with an affiliate program.

There are five steps in the process:

  • Picking a niche to operate in
  • Building a website
  • finding affiliate programs in your niche
  • Write reviews on equipment and learning resources in your niche
  • Write blogs that target keywords in your niche

Pick a niche to operate in.

The first step is to pick a niche to operate in.

The easiest way to do this is by finding hobbies or interests that you love. If you love what you’re writing about online, more than likely you will stick with the project for a long period.

Second, you need to look at profitability. Look at that hobby or interest and see if the equipment is fairly expensive. If the equipment isn’t expensive, you may find that your website may not be very profitable, or you will have to throw more time into it than you would otherwise want.

This is the bare bones of how to select your niche. I recommend you go here to learn about the company that taught me about affiliate marketing. They have a detailed course training on how to select your niche. They even have a niche for you if you have a hard time finding which direction you want to go.

By now you should have your niche together. The next step is…

This is site builder for my web host of choice. This is the free sub-domain builder. The private domain builder is the same except that you can select from the private domains available instead of having to enter a doamin name.

Build a website.

I know this sounds rather intimidating, but building a website is easy.

This requires a few steps. None are difficult, but all are necessary:

1) Secure the domain name. The domain name should be encompass an aspect of your niche.  In other words, if your niche is prepping, a good domain name would be “practicalprepping.com”.

If the domain name you want is already taken, you can always use methods to make the name more brandable.  There are websites out there that can help you do just that.  In fact, Wealthy Affiliate actually teaches you how to make your sites even more brandable.  Go check them out for yourself here.

2) Figure out the name for the site. The easiest way to name the site… Use the domain name with spaces.  This helps with unity and branding.  In other words, you won’t confuse your visitors.

If you have confused visitors, you will have visitors that won’t convert.

3) Selecting the theme for the website. Most web hosts operate with WordPress these days. That is what you should be operating with as well. It’s practically universal these days.

That being said, it is time to select the theme for your website. The theme is the way your site will look to visitors.

Depending on who you use for web hosting, this part of the website building process can be kind of rough.

I had my web hosting with Host Gator in the past. When they built my site, they gave me the WordPress theme of the year. I wanted to use the theme I’m using now, though.

In order to find my current theme, I had to go into the themes section of the WordPress admin console and search for it. When I got the theme up and going, I had dummy admin links up in the top of may website. These links appeared for visitors as well. Needless to say, I wasn’t thrilled.

I went to the web hosting company I’m with now, and the link issue never occurred again. The best part is that my current web host has a library of over 3000 themes that you can choose from, so you have the theme you want on your website… Before it’s even built.

4) Build the website. Now click the button at the bottom of the window to build your website. That’s all there is to it. The web host will take care of the formatting, databases, and stuff like that.

Congratulations, you have your own piece of internet real estate.

Find affiliate programs in your niche

Here is where you can find affilaite program ideas with the service I use.

Now you should find affiliate programs for the equipment and training programs in your niche. You can do this with a simple Google search.

The first two places with affiliate programs that come to mind are Amazon.com and Clickbank.com.

Other than those two places, just about every website that sells something has an affiliate program. Just go to the web sites in your niche and sign up for their affiliate programs. Once you do, you can promote the equipment or training programs that those sites sell… For a commission.

The company I use for my web hosting has more in-depth training on how to select affiliate programs… As well as lists of affiliate programs that you can choose from. You can check it out here.

Now that you have some affilaite programs set up, you’re ready to…

Write reviews on equipment and learning resources within your niche.

The reviews are where you’re going to make money on your site. This is also where it pays off to select a niche in a hobby or interest. I recommend that you actually buy the item you want to review and use it.

Trust me, people know the difference between people how have reviewed content or used a product from those who just read and parroted a bunch of reviews.

Since your niche is a hobby or interest, you already have a lot of products or used a lot of services that you can review, using your personal experience with those products and services.

Now just write about your experiences with the products and services. Write your honest opinions.  Put both the good and the bad. People are generally smart enough to know if you are running a ra-ra campaign or a smear campaign.  They won’t buy through you if you look like you’re operating one of these campaigns.

Just keep a neutral and balanced voice when writing your reviews and you should do fine.

Write blogs that target keywords in your niche

These blog articles are going to be promoting the reviews.

In this section, you will be using a keyword reserch tool to find long-tail keywords to target with your articles. You want to use long-tail keywords because your site doesn’t have enough authority to rank high enough for regular traffic.

As the old saying goes, it’s better to be a big fish in a small pond than a fish in a big red ocean.

Now write content around that long-tail keyword.

There is a certain way you have to use the keyword, though. You use the keyword in your Title, then once in your first paragraph. After that, write naturally.

If you include the keyword any more than that, Google might not value the content as well, and you may not get ranked as high in the search engines. Even when using long-tail keywords.

If you follow the above advice, you should do okay with an affiliate marketing website.

You have to remember that affiliate marketing is a long ball sort of game. It will take you a few months to start generating regular commissions.

You can also blog two or more articles per day and cut the calendar time down. But you have to get the volume of material on your website so it ranks well in order to get good regular money from your site.

No matter what, just keep pressing on.

Again, check these guys out. They are a one-stop-shop for everything from web hosting to affiliate training. They even offer local marketing training in their classroom series after you finish the initial training (or before you finish, if you’re interested in that).
